#FWF 26/10/12: Abandoned

28 Oct

If someone were to ask her where was her favourite place, she would answer sweetly, “The De Grey Street House”. Not that she had anyone to ask her, but if she did, she would tell them how the destructed old place made her feel cherished, in the same way that she had adopted the abandoned ruin into her own heart. That’s why she liked it. A house of grandeur, fallen into damnation. It was an equal of hers, and it spoke to her like a friend.

For her, love between humans always seemed false and preened, as if each person must be scrubbed and polished, with their imperfections erased until there is no reality left to be judged, in order to find and fall in love. The affection she felt deep in her heart for those sunken ceilings, the crumbling walls and the bits of shattered tiles went beyond all petty judgements. Yes, she’ll admit it was not the prettiest place to behold, but it was a beautiful haven to her. Although the roof did heavily leak during storms, it did stop the howling wind from battering the life out of her already beaten body. Out on the streets, the concrete floor did not provide her with comfort or protection, but on the grand old sofa of the De Grey Street House, she could feel the warm sympathy it felt towards her as it thawed her frozen soul.

Two outcasts, fighting the world together. Both abandoned by humanity, but never alone while they have each other.

So happy to have you join us for FWF and I must tell you that you write so beautifully, with alluring detail that pulled me in. I read it twice! 🙂 This really spoke to me. I live in the house I grew up in, my grandma’s home and although it’s old and needs work, there is both a feeling of abandonment, family gone and yet a peace and comfort as well. I really liked your take on the prompt and I can easily see a novel come from it. This being simply a prelude…. lovely work!

Hope to have you back again soon!
